Today's Best Person -- sadly posthumous

Farrah Fawcett has passed away.

Even typing the words it's hard to grasp that idea ... growing up, she was among my first Hollywood crushes. Her hair, her legs, that smile that turned my knees to butter ...

I remember watching her play tennis on "Battle of the Network Stars" and the announcer would tell the score "Love 15" or something along those lines and my brother would respond with "Love Farrah!"

Farrah, for the impact you had on me and all the boys in my generation, for the impact you had on abused women when you released "The Burning Bed", for the never-quit attitude and courage you displayed when you came down with cancer ... thank you, I'll miss you, I love you.

Farrah Fawcett ... today's best person. May she rest forever in peace.

Today's Best Person - Jim Hillis!

Ok, 3 of the 4 of you that read this blog are saying "Who?" The 4th one is Jim himself. So why is Jim today's best person? Because he is one of the few people I know who:

If I were stranded in the middle of the road in the middle of the night -- he would give me a lift

If I were sitting on a streetcorner, homeless and starving to death, he would put me up for the night and give me a sandwich

If I ever needed a hug, he would be there with open arms

And if any of you were in the same situations, he would give the same response.

I have never met him personally but some day I hope to ... and by reading what he has written over the past several month's in Lydia's blog, I know all of the above to be true without a shadow of a doubt.

Why is Jim today's best person? Because, dammit, he literally is one of the BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!

Memorial Day 2009

On Memorial Day, people frequently will say "Thank You" to those who gave their lives for our freedom, and certainly I give my thanks to those who perished in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, World Wars 1 & 2, and so on ...For those who have died in this Iraqi war, thank you doesn't seem to quite fit. Instead, all I can say is "I'm sorry."

I'm sorry it came to this. I'm sorry that the president didn't value your life enough to keep you alive. I'm sorry you aren't still here to help keep us safe from our nation's true enemies. I'm sorry that those in charge treasured their pride, money, greed, and political ambitions too much that you're considered expendable. I'm sorry that lies and deceit was all it took to have you killed. I'm sorry I didn't fight hard enough or effectively enough to keep you home.

To the 4300 (and unfortunately still growing) service men and women who have died for a reason other than our freedom -- we miss you, we love you, may you rest in peace.

Today's Worst Person -- Rush Limbaugh

When the pirate hostage ordeal ended, Limbaugh originally said Obama had nothing to do with it. However, now that it's come out that the pirates were between 17 & 19 years of age, Limbaugh has changed his tune:

RUSH: You know what we have learned about the Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers that were wiped out at the order of Barack Obama, you know what we learned about them? They were teenagers. The Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers who took a US merchant captain hostage for five days were inexperienced youths, the defense secretary, Roberts Gates, said yesterday, adding that the hijackers were between 17 and 19 years old. Now, just imagine the hue and cry had a Republican president ordered the shooting of black teenagers on the high seas. Greetings and welcome back, Rush Limbaugh, the Excellence in Broadcasting Network and the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. They were kids. The story is out, I don't know if it's true or not, but apparently the hijackers, these kids, the merchant marine organizers, Muslim kids, were upset, they wanted to just give the captain back and head home because they were running out of food, they were running out of fuel, they were surrounded by all these US Navy ships, big ships, and they just wanted out of there. That's the story, but then when one of them put a gun to the back of the captain, Mr. Phillips, then bam, bam, bam. There you have it, and three teenagers shot on the high seas at the order of President Obama.

This is beyond sickening. Not only does the windbag change his story when it suits him, now he's saying Obama had innocent kids killed ... THEY WERE PIRATES!!!!

Limbaugh is the lowest form of life imagineable. Today's -- and everyday's -- Worst Person.

Best Person -- the beautiful Darla Crane!

In 1992 I opened a particular magazine and fell in love with a model whose picture I found there -- stunningly beautiful, long red hair ... her name was Darla Crane. 17 years later, her pictures still mesmerize me and she is today's choice for Best Person. A couple of years ago, Darla and I became active in the same Yahoo group and she even joined a group that I was running to my undying joy. Since that time I have gotten to know that model a little bit better through her postings and through personal communications -- she's insightful, very intelligent, funny, level-headed, and she cares about her fans ... and she has tons of fans! In her genre, she is rightfully considered a legend and I am grateful and honored to be her acquaintance and online friend. You can learn more about this superstar through her website http://www.darlacrane.net/.

Today's Worst Person -- The so-called Reverend Eric Schumacher

The term "Reverend" is more than a lable for a member of the clergy, it is also a term of respect coming from the same root as "Revered" and "Reverence". In my opinon, Eric Schumacher deserves no such glory.

Schumacher is the pastor of the Northbrook Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This past week, Schumacher indicated in the Baptist Press that legalized gay marriage in Iowa is more devastating than last year's flooding in Iowa ... a flood that caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and in Cedar Rapids alone displaced 25,000 people in a single day.

Setting aside for a moment the way he callously discarded the effects the flood had on the people in his "flock," the mere idea of what he suggests is just plain stupid. We are talking about people wanting to spend the rest of their lives together in loving matrimony ... what could possibly be wrong with that?

Without even realizing it, in his article he managed to completely destroy the single biggest argument the right wing idiots have against same sex marriage -- the idea that it somehow 'redefines' marriage. Here is a quote from the article: "Marriage is established by God to be a living picture of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the husband representing Christ and the wife representing his church. "Homosexual marriage" presents a distorted picture, a false Gospel, promoting a blasphemous message."

Does this moron not even realize the Gospels are in the NEW Testament ... and marriage existed in the OLD Testament? In other words, marriage has been around longer than Christianity has. In other words ... ERIC SCHUMACHER HAS REDEFINED MARRIAGE!!!

And a little aside to the Thumpers out there .... Jesus never even mentions gay marriage -- or homosexuality for that matter. Not once. Not in any of the four Gospels (I have to specify there are four of them because I've learned that people who proclaim the Bible the loudest also seem to know the least about it)

Marriage used to be, and in some cultures still is, treated as a property exchange. In some cultures, people getting married don't even meet until their wedding day. Marriage to multiple people is still allowed in some countries.

Shotgun weddings

Marriages of convenience

Common Law marriages.

Annulled marriages

Divorces

Can we please drop the moronic argument of redefining marriage now?

Bans on same sex marriage are discrimination -- plain and simple. And for promoting legalized discrimination, Eric Schumacher is today's worst person.

Today's Best Person -- Lydia Cornell

I first became familiar with -- and developed a major crush on -- Lydia through her portrayal of Sara Rush on the 80's sitcom Too Close for Comfort, the younger daughter of Ted Knight's character Henry Rush. More recently, however, she has become known as a progressive political activist and radio co-host of the Basham and Cornell Show (http://www.bashamandcornell.com/). She is currently working on several projects including books on politics and religion.

Lydia is a shining example of what a progressive (or liberal, if you prefer), a Christian, and an American should be. She is funny, intelligent, warm, and above all else loving. Over the past two years of getting to know her through her blog and through personal email, I have grown to love and respect her -- she is one of the few people who is as genuinely beautiful on the inside as she has always been on the outside.

Her website and blog can be found at http://www.lydiacornell.com/.
